Overview

The Ionian Aquarium at Lixouri, in Kefallinia Island, Greece and its twinning with that of Santa Maria al Bagno in the Salento Peninsula, Province of Lecce, Italy, were funded by the European Union within the frame-work of the European Territorial Cooperation Programme Greece-Italy 2007-2013 under the APREH Project (Inter-disciplinary Aquaria for the Promotion of Environment and History).
The objective of the APREH was the setting up of two aquaria on both sides of the Ionian Sea, the trans-boundary zone between Greece and Italy, for highlighting the riches of the natural and cultural marine resources and promoting the blue growth and eco-tourism concepts.
